R. Alex Mayo Bio
Alex completed his MSc at the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) with Prof. Kathryn Preuss. After three years working in solid form screening and crystallization process development at Solid State Pharma (Nova Scotia, Canada), he returned to academia to complete a PhD with Prof. Erin Johnson at Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia, Canada). He developed a novel approach to compare crystal structures using their powder diffractograms that can accommodate deformations due to disparate conditions (temperature, pressure, computational optimization). This method, VC-PWDF, has been valuable in identifying target structures in crystal structure prediction landscapes and matching experimental powder diffractograms to crystal structures. He started a postdoc position with Prof. Tom Woo (University of Ottawa, Canada) in September 2023 and will work on machine learning interatomic potentials for applications in simulating properties of metal organic frameworks.
